Register Now for HEU's 2007 Equity Conference
The HEU's four equity committees - Ethnic Diversity, First Nations, Lesbians and Gay Men, and People with DisAbilities - are getting ready for this year's Equity Conference on April 3 and 4 in Richmond.
Members who identify themselves as part of one of these four equity-seeking groups are invited to attend the conference.
Participants will be able to elect new equity caucus members, help committees develop action plans and support the work towards greater equality within the labour movement and beyond.
In recent years, the equity committees have worked on issues connected to the B.C. Liberal government’s policies, which have disproportionately affected women, Aboriginal people, lesbians, gay men, transgendered people, people with disAbilities, and people of colour.
When the HEU organized dietary and housekeeping workers employed by "the big three” multinational corporations – Sodexho, Aramark and Compass – this strengthened the need to address issues of discrimination, economic exploitation and social justice.
120 members from around the province are expected to attend the conference. Of this number, 40 will be from the current equity standing committees and the other 80 will be selected from the received applications.
The application deadline is Thursday, March 1st.
Completed application forms can be returned to Toni Hawley in the education department at the HEU Provincial Office by fax 604-739-1510 or mail 5000 North Fraser Way, Burnaby, BC V5J 5M3.
