Community Social Services

March is Community Social Services Awareness Month

The first phase of a longer-term campaign to raise awareness about the vital role community social services play in our communities, and in the lives of the people HEU members support, is now underway.

The multi-union campaign is promoting the need for more resources to deal with inadequate government funding, growing waitlists for services, and retention and recruitment challenges throughout the sector.

HEU members working in community social services report huge workload challenges as a direct result of short-staffing. And a growing body of research confirms low wages and deteriorating working conditions are making it increasingly difficult for many agencies to maintain a stable, qualified workforce.

Community activities throughout the month will range from open houses to information booths and displays in public locations. To date, 15 city councils have passed resolutions designating March as community social services awareness month.
