The Hospital Employees’ Union and Aramark have scheduled a series of dates in April for negotiations for a first collective agreement covering nearly 700 HEU members providing housekeeping services in Vancouver Coastal Health Authority facilities.

Bargaining dates are: April 5-7, 13 and 14, 21 and 22, and 27 and 28. In preparation for bargaining the HEU Aramark bargaining committee’s first meeting was held on March 9 in the union’s Provincial Office.

That meeting followed the Aramark members’ bargaining conference held on Feb.26 where more than 50 workers shared workplace experiences, identified bargaining issues and elected their bargaining committee.

The following sisters and brothers will represent VCHA Aramark members as their bargaining committee:
  • Samira Rusman (Richmond Hospital)
  • Avelina Vasquez (St. Paul’s Hospital)
  • Stephen Lemarec (Lion's Gate Hospital)
  • Richard Shaw (Powell River General Hospital).

In January, employees working for Aramark — a US-based corporation contracted by the health authority to provide cleaning services — voted 84 per cent in favour of joining HEU.

The newly-certified members work at more than 20 health care facilities on the Sunshine Coast and in the Lower Mainland, including major hospitals like St. Paul’s, Vancouver General, Powell River General, Lion’s Gate and Richmond.
