Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) are an essential part of modern nursing care.

They play an important role in providing better care for you and your family.

Did you know?
  • LPNs are regulated health care professionals licensed by the College of LPNs of British Columbia.
  • LPNs work in hospitals, residential care and in the community.
  • LPNs care for patients, residents and clients through every stage of life.
  • LPNs carry out a wide range of nursing functions within their scope of practice.
  • LPNs are accountable for their decisions and actions.
  • LPNs work collaboratively alongside other health care team members including care aides, registered nurses and doctors.

The Hospital Employees' Union represents most working LPNs in B.C.  And our union believes that British Columbians benefit when all health professionals -- including LPNs -- are able to work to their full potential as part of a team.

We're not alone in that belief. Nursing managers, health adminstrators and government are recognizing that the optimal use of LPNs can improve your care.

Many of these professional nurses are taking on specialty roles in areas like operating rooms, emergency, maternity, renal and mental health -- as well as playing leadership roles in residential care settings.

Better health care through better use of LPNs

We've come a long way in B.C. but we're still behind other provinces in utilizing the skills and experience of LPNs.

Our province ranks last in the number of working LPNs compared to total population.

LPNs are on the front lines of delivering care.

We need to recognize their important contributions and support the collaborative roles they play on the health care team.

On May 13, we celebrated HEU LPNs and the contributions they make to your care.
