Your local unions

Locals are the building blocks of HEU’s democratic structure and a key communications link between the provincial union and the worksite.

Every member belongs to a union local, which is the front-line mechanism for dealing with member grievances, workplace issues and grassroots campaigns.

Locals meet on a regular basis. Members elect their own executive officers annually and either elect – or the local executive appoints – shop stewards and occupational health and safety representatives. The members draft policy resolutions, constitutional amendments and bargaining demands that are then discussed and voted on by HEU’s province-wide membership.

Through their locals, members also elect delegates to attend HEU’s biennial convention, wage policy conference and other provincial or regional membership meetings.

And part of every union dues dollar you pay, goes right back to the local to support activities and events determined by the local membership.
