Fast Facts about the Hospital Employees’ Union:
  • founded in 1944 by 500 members at one hospital
  • in 2004, HEU represents 43,000 front-line workers in health care and community social services working in more than 400 facilities, agencies and health regions across British Columbia
  • HEU acting secretary-business manager Zorica Bosancic is the chief administrative officer of the union and its main spokesperson
  • Fred Muzin is president
  • Mary LaPlante is financial secretary
  • HEU is B.C.’s largest union of women — 87 per cent of HEU’s members are women
  • 50 per cent of HEU members work in hospitals and another 42 per cent work in long-term and intermediate care facilities — most are covered by a single collective agreement
  • the remaining eight per cent work in community health, community social services, private for-profit health care settings and in First Nations health centres
  • the largest group of workers within the HEU membership provide direct patient/resident care and include licensed practical nurses, care aides, orderlies, activity aides and group home workers
  • HEU members also provide critical support services in a number of job categories, including clerical, dietary, housekeeping, technical, laundry, supply distribution, trades and others
  • about 50 per cent of HEU members work in the Lower Mainland, 17 per cent on Vancouver Island, 15 per cent in the Okanagan, six per cent in the Kootenays, four per cent in the Fraser Valley and seven per cent in the North
