Shredded contracts lead to lay-offs at Burnaby nursing home

Rally to support laid off health care workers at Willingdon Park Hospital at 11 a.m. Wednesday

The operator of a publicly funded nursing facility in Burnaby is taking full advantage of contract breaking legislation passed by the Gordon Campbell Liberals earlier this year to fire 18 front-line health care workers — most of them women and many with more than 20 years of service.

Their union is holding a rally at the Willingdon Park Hospital Wednesday in support of these workers and to bring attention to Victoria’s policies which will lead to the loss of skilled and experienced workers in long-term care facilities.

The facility operator laid off seven housekeeping and laundry staff last month and gave pink slips to another 11 workers — mostly dietary workers — effective January 19.
