Termination notices for 41 care aides and activity aides employed by Caresource Solutions at the West Van Care Centre have been withdrawn, and the company will begin first contract negotiations with the Hospital Employees’ Union next month.

These actions are the result of an agreement reached Wednesday by HEU with the operators of the facility – Arcan Developments – and Caresource at the Labour Relations Board.

HEU had filed unfair labour practice complaints against Caresource after the pink slips were issued and in response to their communications to workers at the Lynn Valley Care Centre where workers have signed HEU cards.

Caresource had issued pink slips to the workers on October 3. The care aides and activity aides at West Van Care Centre voted to join HEU on September 28 – just a few days before.

Arcan terminated its commercial contract with Caresource on September 29.

Under the agreement – reached at the Labour Relations Board after the union filed two separate unfair labour practice complaints – Arcan and Caresource will continue their commercial contract until at least February 27, 2007.

Caresource must also make space available for HEU to conduct an information meeting with about 57 care aides at the Lynn Valley Care Centre.

The meeting will happen either in the facility staff room or at a nearby hotel.
