Fighting back against privatization: two HEU videos now available

For those who did not have an opportunity to hear Scottish union activist Carolyn Leckie talk about how unionized workers are successfully fighting back against the privatization of health care support services in Britain, a 30-minute video from her visit to the St. Paul’s Hospital local is now available.

Leckie’s whirlwind five-day speaking tour of Lower Mainland hospitals was organized by HEU/CUPE in mid-January with financial support from CUPE national.

Those meetings presented a detailed picture of the devastating impact privatized health care support services has had on British hospitals, as well as strategies used by hospital workers in Scotland to win a 2002 strike against the multi-national corporation, Sodexho.

In addition, a five-minute video capturing the highlights of January 28’s political protest in the Lower Mainland, is also available.

To view either video go to www.workingtv.com and under “new on the web” click on “Lessons from the UK” or “Bill 29 — One Year After.” Software required to see the videos can be downloaded at this site.

For those who are not able to access the videos through the web, copies can be obtained from the HEU Provincial Office Communications Department by calling 604-456-7092 or 1-800-663-5813, local 7092.
