HEU’s Mary LaPlante seeks re-election to Pacific Blue Cross board April 22

Pacific Blue Cross, the carrier for HEU’s 43,000 facilities sector members’ extended health benefits, will hold its annual general meeting (AGM) at the Westin Bayshore Hotel, 1601 W. Georgia Street, Vancouver on Thursday, April 22 at 7:00 p.m.

Members and their families are encouraged to attend the meeting and support HEU financial secretary Mary LaPlante, currently a member of the board of directors, in her bid for re-election.

Sister LaPlante has been a director for five years—she was first elected to the CU&C Health Services Society board—and is one of five candidates running to fill four positions.

HEU members and other workers deserve strong representation on the board to ensure input into the way benefits are provided and administered. When CU&C and M.S.A. merged in the fall of 1997, the two boards melded into one Pacific Blue Cross board without a reduction in numbers.

The move toward fewer board members fulfils an agreement made after the merger to bring the board’s size back to a more workable composition, and will be completed in 2000. And in a cost-cutting move, Pacific Blue Cross has stopped sending out notices of its AGM to stakeholders, claiming that the practice is too expensive.

Instead, the company has opted to use a much less effective method—it’s advertising the meeting in newspapers. Pacific Blue Cross Annual General Meeting Thursday, April 22 7:00 p.m. Westin Bayshore Hotel 1601 W. Georgia Street Vancouver
