HEU members invited to pro-choice rally
Please come, say UBC Students for Choice This is an urgent message to HEU members. UBC Students for Choice want as many friends and supporters as possible to come to a peaceful pro-choice rally on Wednesday, Sept. 29 in front of UBC's Goddess of Democracy. GAP (Genocide Awareness Project) is coming to UBC next week. This American-based group has been invited to UBC by the campus anti-choice group. This is their first venture into Canada. They use large six by 14 feet billboards of colour photos of aborted fetuses, Holocaust and black lynching victims to shock people into making a link between abortion and genocide. GAP has been to several universities in the U.S. and they always bring with them a potential for violence. When their display was attacked at the University of Kansas by angry students, GAP pressed charges against the university. Security staff and the RCMP will be present at all times at the UBC rally. "We call upon all of you to help mobilize and fight this message of hate against women, and this insult and exploitation of the real sufferings of so many peoples," says Joyce Arthur, one of the organizers of the event. Protests will be continuous on Sept. 29 and 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. An information fair hosted by various womenís groups will be set up near the GAP display. Interested HEU members can also help out with security, sign-making or other activities. Just contact Erin Kaiser at UBC Students for Choice at 822-8722 or e-mail email@example.com. "This group is very dangerous," says HEU's secretary-business manager Chris Allnutt. "Using images of real genocide, they propose to associate those who fight for women's freedom to choose with Hitler and murderers." "I encourage all HEU members who are able, to join UBC students in protesting this outrage." The Goddess of Democracy statue is in the plaza between the Student Union Building and the UBC swimming pool. The plaza is also adjacent to the university's bus loop.
