New and experienced HEU activists are encouraged to participate in the union’s Summer School 2007, held June 24-29 at the University of British Columbia.

This year, the biennial educational program is divided into two courses – Grassroots Leadership and Saving Medicare.

Grassroots Leadership Development: Expanding our Power Base is offered to members interested in becoming active at their work sites and in their communities, and are willing to commit over the next 18 months to strengthening the union.

Topics include: the current reality facing HEU workers, what “forces” divide workers, power relationships among the working class, developing a collective understanding and vision of grassroots democratic leadership and a social justice union.

Saving Medicare: Reversing the Privatization Trend is offered to members already experienced in activities or campaigns to support public health care and stop privatization.

Some of the topics covered in this workshop are: the impact of privatization on HEU workers, types of privatization and the effects on the public system, ways the government supports or undermines a strong public system, and how we can influence government decision-making.

Completed applications must be received at the Provincial Office, 5000 North Fraser Way, Burnaby, B.C. V5J 5M3 (or faxed to 604-739-1510) by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4, 2007, attention: Education Department.
