LRB dismisses IWA’s certification bid at Beacon Hill Villa

Decision clears the way for HEU vote count

B.C.’s Labour Relations Board has dismissed an application by the Industrial Wood and Allied Workers of Canada (IWA) — Local 1-3567 to certify a group of Compass employees working at Beacon Hill Villa.

The IWA’s application was dismissed on the basis that the description of the proposed bargaining unit — “non-clinical services” — was inappropriate.

The November 6, 2003 decision clears the way for HEU’s certification vote at Beacon Hill to be counted. Although Beacon Hill workers cast their ballots in late September, the votes had been sealed until issues arising from the IWA’s application could be dealt with.

HEU will now press for the ballot box to be opened as soon as possible.
