Two recent decisions by BC’s Labour Relations Board have confirmed HEU’s standing as the union of choice for 300 Compass workers delivering housekeeping and food services in the Provincial Health Services Authority, and 400 housekeepers employed by Sodexho in the Fraser Health Authority.

On September 30, the LRB dismissed all objections and an appeal from the United Steelworkers of America (Local 1-3567), which had challenged HEU’s right to continue as the certified bargaining agent for workers at Children and Women’s Hospital, Sunnyhill Hospital and BC Cancer Agency.

Compass employees at the three PHSA sites had voted to become HEU members in April, 2004 but it was more than a year before the ballots were counted. HEU’s application to represent the workers was certified on August 8, 2005.

In a separate decision handed down on October 3, the Board also dismissed objections filed by USWA (Local 1-3567) and Sodexho, confirming that HEU will continue to represent workers at Queen’s Park, Royal Columbian Hospital, Surrey Memorial, Chiliwack and Heritage Home, and Fellburn Care Centre.

HEU became the official bargaining representative for these Sodexho employees on June 27, 2005.
