Stop privatization, keep Medicare healthy the message for June 14 national day of action

With Canada's Medicare system facing its biggest privatization threat ever in the form of Ralph Klein's bid to legalize private hospitals, health care workers from coast to coast will be sounding the alarm June 14 to stop private health care. Coordinated at a national level by CUPE and other health care unions, HEU is working closely on B.C. events with BCNU and BCGEU. We'll be urging our members to get active, and to show their concern about the privatization threat by gathering at noon on that day in appropriate and creative actions. While June 14 is still some time off, the three unions are moving forward with our planning efforts. Here's what's heading your way soon: ? Special June 14 Day of Warning stickers will be in the mail to all HEU secretary-treasurers June 1; ? The June 1 mailout will also contain a special package of material, outlining suggestions on how to organize creative events, and leaflets to help get the word out to members about the Day of Warning; ? BCGEU, BCNU and HEU are working on a central rally in Victoria for June 14, which will be part of the B.C. Federation of Labour's Campaign 2000 week of events in southern Vancouver Island; ? Local leaders in other targeted communities will be contacted about possibilities to organize higher profile events in their locales.
