Union members backed in provincial election
HEU/CUPE candidates received $32,000 in cash support from union for May 16 vote
HEU provided considerable financial support to union members who ran for office in the May 16 provincial election.
Candidates who were members of HEU and CUPE received a total of $32,000 in cash donations — almost a third of the total donations made by the union in the general election. Another $15,000 went to the NDP’s central campaign and the balance was distributed among another 38 candidates including donations of $1,000 each to opposition MLAs Joy MacPhail and Jenny Kwan.
In all, the union made $98,250 in cash donations during the election. “Those HEU and CUPE members who ran in last May’s election may not have won,” says HEU assistant secretary-business manager Zorica Bosancic. “But they did manage to keep the issues of health care and the rights of working people front and centre during the campaign.
“Our challenge now is to hold the new Liberal government to their election commitment to protect and strengthen public health care.”
The largest single donation — $20,000 — went to HEU second vice-president Colleen Fitzpatrick who came within 830 votesof victory in the North Coast riding.
