Update: Support striking ferry workers

B.C. ferry workers continue with picketing today, in the second day of strike action.

While bargaining with the B.C. Ferry Corporation is set to kick off this morning, it appears protest lines will stay up. HEU members who want to lend more support can phone 604-438-5000, or 1-800-663-5813 to find out more information.

Yesterday when the job action began, HEU’s Provincial Executive along with dozens of union activists and staff were on hand at the Horseshoe Bay terminal walking the picket line to show their solidarity.

In another show of solidarity from HEU members for the ferry workers, members of HEU’s Salt Spring local were on the lines at their island ferry terminal from the outset.

HEU secretary-business manager Chris Allnutt condemned the Campbell government for its confrontational approach to ferry bargaining, which he said was the root cause of the dispute. And he blamed the Liberal’s Ferry Corp. for the breakdown in essential service sailings in the past 48 hours.

He said the struggle of ferry workers against big wage rollbacks and contracting out demanded by the Campbell government is the same fight that HEU members are engaged in to protect jobs and quality services in health care.

We’ll provide regular updates on the HEU website, www.heu.org. But for up-to-date information check out the websites of the B.C. Ferry and Marine Workers’ Union www.bcfmwu.com, or the B.C. Federation of Labour www.bcfed.com.
