Victory! HEU Providence members have “one employer”

LRB rules expanded seniority rights for all PHC health workers in Vancouver

Hospital Employees’ Union (CUPE) members working in all Providence Health Care facilities in Vancouver are now under one certification with one employer due to a significant ruling brought down late last week by the Labour Relations Board.

“This is a major victory for Providence members who were excluded from an earlier LRB decision that expanded the seniority rights of their sisters and brothers who are direct employees of health authorities,” says HEU secretary-business manager Chris Allnutt. “Now our members in every PHC facility in Vancouver have expanded options.”

All the former separate certifications under Providence Health Care will be dovetailed into one seniority list under one certification. The expanded seniority rights applies to all provisions of the collective agreement including posting and bumping.

HEU and Providence are currently discussing implementation of the decision.

The ruling affects more than 2,500 HEU members working at St. Paul’s Hospital, Mount St. Joseph’s, Holy Family, St. Vincent’s (including Langara, Arbutus and Brock Fahrni) and Youville Residence.
