As members of HEU, you will have all the support and resources you need to bargain your first collective agreement.
It’s an exciting process that begins with a members’ meeting where you decide your bargaining priorities – the things that are most important to you to achieve in a first contract. These will include monetary items like wages and benefits as well as important workplace rights and a process to resolve workplace disputes.
You will also elect your own bargaining committee. Together, your new bargaining committee and an experienced union negotiator will hold a series of meetings with your employer to negotiate the terms of your first collective agreement.
Once the bargaining committee reaches a tentative agreement with your employer, you will receive a full report explaining the proposed terms of the contract. And because you are a member of a democratic union, you and your co-workers will vote on whether or not to accept the agreement that has been negotiated on your behalf.
