A Labour Relations Board-appointed arbitrator will hold hearings on March 13, 14 and 16 before ruling on a first collective agreement for about 700 Compass members on Vancouver Island. The location has yet to be determined

Arbitrator Stan Lanyon will hear the HEU bargaining team and the employer on what provisions should be included in the agreement.

Though both the union and the employer were available for an earlier hearing, Lanyon could not meet before March.

Lanyon was appointed last month under Section 55 of the B.C. Labour Code - the same provision that was used to reach a collective agreement last month for HEU members working for Compass in the Provincial Health Services Authority.

Late last year, a mediator had issued a report on the Compass/VIHA negotiations recommending that many collective bargaining issues be referred to the arbitrator.

The negotiations began last April. And members gave their bargaining committee a 96 per cent strike mandate last October. The union then applied for mediation/arbitration under section 55 of the Code.
