HEU members bargaining for a first contract with D2 Education Services report mounting frustrations with the employer’s failure to respond to the union’s non-monetary proposals, which were tabled during the April 21 bargaining session.

When the two parties met on June 12 and 13 – almost eight weeks later – the bargaining committee expected a reply to those proposals from the employer. Instead, the employer took the position that they were only willing to discuss specific areas of concern that workers may have.

HEU bargaining spokesperson Heather Compton says the employer made it very clear that they are unwilling to discuss the union’s proposals, and that they instead want to continue with “current practices” in all areas of employment.

“But to date, this employer has not provided the union with a requested copy of what those current practices are,” explains Compton.

“It’s simply not acceptable for this employer to refuse to discuss any collective agreement language relating to such items as a grievance procedure, hours of work, scheduling, job posting language, occupational health and safety or seniority language.”

A membership meeting to discuss these and other issues is being held on Friday, June 20.
