Hospital Employees’ Union representatives are working hard this week to finalize essential services levels in hospitals and long-term care facilities across the province and have offered to meet through the weekend if necessary.
Local leaders and staff representatives have been working through the Labour Relations Board mediation and adjudication process to sign off on local essential services levels, but the process is proving cumbersome.
“That’s why we applied to the LRB in March for interim levels based on 2001 levels,” says HEU secretary-business manager Chris Allnutt. “But unlike in previous years, the Board rejected our application for an interim order `at this juncture’.
“Our members have voted overwhelmingly to take job action if necessary,” adds Allnutt. “Given this mandate, it is critical that there be renewed efforts by all the parties involved to finalize the essential services process.”
