After contract talks – between the Hospital Employees’ Union and Sterling Health Services – failed to move the union’s bargaining agenda forward for health care workers at Simon Fraser Lodge in Prince George, HEU applied for mediation on December 29.

In 2009, Sterling Health Services, which operates Simon Fraser Lodge, entered into a first collective agreement with HEU members, with assurances to include additional compensation when renewing the contract this year.

However, during negotiations earlier this fall, the employer only resolved two proposals that HEU put on the bargaining table, and offered an across-the-board $0.25 an hour wage increase.

“This was certainly not consistent with the promises they made at last year’s bargaining table,” says HEU bargaining representative Debbie Kamal Ali. “We’re hoping that with the help of a mediator, this employer will be moved to conclude a collective agreement that’s fair to our members.”

HEU represents more than 100 members working at the private-for-profit, community and adult care facility, including licensed practical nurses, registered nurses and care aides.
