HEU members prepare to bargain with major support services contractors
HEU members are uniting for fairness as they prepare for bargaining this September.
On June 12, 13 and 14, over 75 HEU delegates representing all contracted workers employed by the five major private companies came together for the first time to build unity around key bargaining priorities at the 2012 bargaining conference.
Nearly 4,000 HEU members work for Aramark, Sodexo, Compass, Marquise and Acciona in acute care hospitals, long-term care, independent and assisted-living facilities throughout the Lower Mainland and parts of Vancouver Island.
Members working for these five employers are covered by 13 different collective agreements at 80 different worksites in four different health authorities.
At the June bargaining conference, safe workloads, workplace respect and dignity, and fair compensation were identified as the top priorities for this round of bargaining.
There was also a commitment to increase members’ strength and participation in bargaining by involving more members during contract negotiations through the newly established Contract Action Teams (CAT).
CAT members will work with their bargaining team to keep other co-workers informed and involved throughout negotiations. All CAT members must be nominated by their co-workers. CAT members, bargaining team members and shop stewards will be gathering at HEU headquarters on September 11 for a special workshop to build on our unity.
