Union leaders will meet with labour minister Graham Bruce Friday to push for a fair settlement for health care workers one day after government legislated a collective agreement.

Officers of the B.C. Federation of Labour will press Bruce to shelve Bill 37 and work with health unions to find a settlement that includes protection for health care workers against privatization and contracting out.

Bill 37 contains massive wage concessions while allowing health employers to continue to privatize services and contract out jobs.

“We need to find a solution to the problem created by government,” says Hospital Employees’ Union secretary-business manager Chris Allnutt. “A fair settlement would protect health services and the workers who deliver them.”

The B.C. Federation of Labour hasn’t ruled out escalating job action in an effort to achieve job security for HEU members.
