HEU Sodexho members working in the Lower Mainland have sent more than 600 “It’s Time to Bargain” postcards to their employer in a massive demonstration of the urgent need to begin negotiations for first collective agreements.

The HEU Sodexho bargaining committee delivered the postcards to the company’s Vancouver office on February 23 on behalf of housekeeping and food service workers in the Vancouver Coastal and Fraser health authorities and at German Canadian Care Home.

Bargaining committee members went out to work sites to gather the postcards, talk with members and learn first-hand about the issues that concern workers most. And site representatives mailed the postcards to HEU’s Provincial Office from Sechelt, Gibson’s and Squamish.

HEU acting secretary-business manager Zorica Bosancic says that the support the bargaining committee received from members proves how seriously workers take bargaining and how they want their employer to do the same.

“Everywhere the bargaining committee went, our members told them how much they appreciated the opportunity to discuss concerns — and how important it is to have their concerns addressed in bargaining,” says Bosancic.

“People want to bargain. Members, site reps, local executives and the bargaining committee worked very hard to collect the signed postcards so that the message to Sodexho would be strong — let’s get to the table.”

The postcard campaign is the first step in the Sodexho members’ fight to obtain first contracts.

“Sodexho members are up for the fight,” says Bosancic. “They fought to be HEU members and they’ll fight for their contracts.”
