Ratification votes counted for tentative agreements with Big 3

HEU members ratify Compass PHSA, Sodexo VCHA and Sodexo FHA agreements; members reject Aramark VCHA and Compass VIHA agreements

Results from more than two weeks of ratification votes by HEU members on tentative agreements with Sodexo, Aramark and Compass have produced mixed results.

Members employed by Sodexo in the Vancouver Coastal and Fraser health authorities voted 81 and 58 per cent, respectively, to ratify new collective agreements.

HEU members at four stand-alone Sodexo certifications overwhelmingly ratified the new collective agreements: German Canadian, 88 per cent; Central Care, 94 per cent; Foyer Maillard, 100 per cent; and Shannon Oaks, 100 per cent.

Members employed by Compass in the Provincial Health Services Authority also voted in favour of ratification, by a margin of 58 per cent.

However, 51 per cent of members employed by Aramark in the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority and 73 per cent of members employed by Compass in the Vancouver Island Heath Authority rejected the tentative agreements.

“There’s no doubt that workers in contracted-out hospital support services face real challenges,” said HEU secretary-business manager Judy Darcy. “It’s clear that all members made tough choices.”

The Compass VIHA and Aramark VCHA bargaining committees will now meet to consider their next steps.

“It will be important for the bargaining committees to discuss members’ key concerns, so we can return to the Compass and Aramark bargaining tables and achieve negotiated collective agreements for all members,” said Darcy.

Negotiations began in late September, and the bargaining committees reached tentative agreements with Sodexo, Aramark and Compass in early May. Voting on the different agreements began on May 11 and concluded May 25.

For members employed by Compass in PHSA and by Sodexo in FHA, VCHA, and at German Canadian, Central Care, Foyer Maillard and Shannon Oaks, the ratified terms of settlement will be effective immediately. Additional details on the new collective agreements will be made available in the next few weeks.
