HEU members working at Community Living Victoria, Kardel Consulting Services and Crossroads Human Services in Victoria were on picket lines October 30 as part of a series of rotating job actions underway in the community social services sector.

Members of the B.C. Government and Service Employees Union working at the Inter-Cultural Association for Greater Victoria were also on strike.

Despite the heavy rain and cool temperatures, workers’ spirits were high as passing cars honked their support, members of CAW Local 4276 dropped off vats of coffee and donuts, and some parents and individuals affected by the action joined the lines.

A noon hour protest outside Minister Ida Chong’s office drew support from postal workers, teachers, ferry workers and others who braved the weather to show their solidarity with striking workers. Members of the International Workers of the World were also on hand to provide music throughout the rally. Thursday’s actions move to the Lower Mainland where members of the Health Sciences Association, the Canadian Union of Public Employees and BCGEU will be taking strike action at six sites in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody.

A protest rally will be held at MLA Douglas Horne’s constituency office at 130 Brew Street in Port Moody from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm.
