HEU’s 2021 convention will be “virtual.”
HEU’s 32nd biennial convention is scheduled for November 1 to 5. This convention was previously scheduled for November 2020 but was delayed because of pandemic-related restrictions.
On May 5, 2021, the HEU convention call was sent by registered mail to the Secretary-Treasurers that we have on file for our locals.
As of the date of the convention call, B.C. remains under a state of emergency related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Public health orders currently in effect in B.C. restrict travel within the province and place limits on most gatherings and events.
The HEU Provincial Executive has decided that the 2021 convention will be held virtually, using an online platform, so that delegates can participate remotely instead of travelling to Vancouver.
While there are positive signs that many COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings will be eased over the next few weeks and months, there is also uncertainty about whether a week-long convention of 800 or more health care workers will be permitted and/or advisable in early November, and under what conditions.
And we need that certainty.
All paperwork for convention must be received by Tuesday August 3, 2021 by 5:00 pm at Provincial Office. If your local’s information wasn’t up to date with the union, the Convention Call package likely went to the previous person in your local holding the Secretary-Treasurer position.
