The Hospital Employees’ Union has received top honours from the Canadian Association of Labour Media for its quarterly newspaper the Guardian.

The HEU tabloid won the “Best Overall Publication” award for 2004 in its class of staff-produced, national and provincial union publications. The award ceremony took place at the CALM annual meeting held June 10 —12 in Ottawa.

The award recognizes the “best combined use of writing, graphics, design, editorial content and judgment.”

First published in 1958, the Guardian has a circulation of about 50,000 and is distributed to HEU members, decision-makers and the media.

And for the second year running, HEU also received the “Best Print Ad” award — this time for an ad entitled “Not Wanted” that described the skills and experience of health care workers laid off at Lion’s Gate Hospital in North Vancouver.
