St. Paul’s workers to hold vigil for fairness at Archbishop’s office

With 275 dietary workers’ jobs at stake, health care workers from St. Paul’s Hospital will hold a vigil at 3:30 today outside the office of Archbishop Raymond Roussin in an attempt to get Providence Health Care to reconsider its privatization plans.

Hospital Employees’ Union members throughout Providence Health Care facilities continue to put pressure on the Catholic Church regarding the contracting out of in-patient and retail food services. Up to 275 dietary workers could lose their jobs under the plan.

HEU members have requested an opportunity to meet with Archbishop Roussin and discuss the issue with him, but have yet to secure a meeting. Their aim is to tell the employer it has a responsibility to abide by the principles of faith-based delivery of healthcare as set out by the PHC: fair treatment of workers, and respecting the dignity and value of work.
