Another gain for part-time workers

Stat holiday pay to increase Sept. 1

Issues around the calculation of statutory holiday pay for part-time workers covered by the facilities sector agreement have been settled, resulting in another improvement to their compensation package.

The Health Employers Association of B.C. has instructed employers to calculate statutory holiday pay based on four and four-tenths per cent (4.4%) of regular part-time employees’ non-statutory holiday paid hours, up from four and two-tenths per cent (4.2%).

Effective on the first day of the first payroll period beginning on or after Sept. 1, 2001, all employers must use the new percentage.

“Gains for part-time workers are among of our top priorities every time we bargain a new collective agreement,” says HEU secretary-business manager Chris Allnutt. “All our members deserve to be treated fairly and equally whether they work part-time, casual or full-time, and every victory moves us closer to ensuring that employers do just that.”
