Elkins and Bernardo re-elected
Delegates to the 29th biennial convention of the Hospital Employees’ Union have re-elected Victor Elkins as the union’s president for a second term. Elkins is a cardiac perfusion assistant from the PHSA Amalgamated Local.
Donisa Bernardo, a pharmacy technician from Royal Inland Hospital, who has served four terms as the union’s financial secretary, was acclaimed by delegates to a fifth term on Wednesday morning.
Delegates also ratified Bonnie Pearson as the union’s secretary-business manager, as required by the union’s constitution.

Delegates also elected three vice-presidents.
Carolyn Unsworth, a care aide from the Queen's Park Local, was elected 1st vice-president. Previously, she served as 2nd vice-president.
Barb Nederpel, a clerk from the Kamloops-Thompson Local and an outgoing regional vice-president, was elected HEU's 2nd vice-president.
And Ken Robinson, who served as 1st vice-president from 2012-2014, was elected 3rd vice-president. Robinson is a diet technician from the Kelowna Local.
Betty Valenzuela (VGH Local) was elected senior trustee-elect, and Jim Calvin (Chilliwack Local) was elected trustee. Valenzuela and Calvin both previously served as trustees.
Valenzuela is a health records clerk, and Calvin is a mental health rehab assistant.
Kelly Knox (St. Paul's Local), elected senior trustee-elect in 2012, will continue to serve on the PE as the senior trustee. Knox is a porter/ward aide.
HEU delegates broke into their regions to elect 12 regional vice-presidents to serve on the union’s Provincial Executive over the next two years.
On the South Island, Bill McMullan, a residential support worker from Kardel Local, was re-elected RVP, while Barb Biley -- a medical stenographer and cook from Comox Local -- was re-elected to represent the North Island.
For Coastal, community support worker Louella Vincent (WHR-LM Local) and John Fraser, a dietary aide from Powell River (6424) Local were re-elected and are joined by health care assistant Leonora Calingasan (St. Vincent's Local).
In the North, care aide Sarah Thom (Fort St. John Local) and power engineer Mike Cartwright (Prince George Local) are the new RVPs.
The Fraser region returned Surrey Local's Jodi George (renal dialysis tech) as an RVP and she’ll be joined by unit clerk Debbie Dyer (RCH Local).
And in the Interior, delegates elected multi-service worker Dawn Thurston (SSHC Local) for the Okanagan and care aide Jody Berg (Hillside-Pioneer Local) for Kamloops-Thompson – and re-elected long-term care aide Shelley Bridge (Columbia View Lodge Local) for the Kootenays.
Nearly 650 delegates from HEU locals attended the union’s convention in Vancouver.
