As HEU’s Provincial Executive works quickly to put the many changes adopted by October’s biennial convention into practice, the union is seeking applications from local activists who are interested in joining a PE sub-committee.

In an effort to increase and strengthen membership involvement at the provincial level, convention delegates boosted the number of rank-and-file members on PE sub-committees from four to five and reduced the number of PE members from three to two.

Delegates also directed that sub-committees be co-chaired by a PE member and a member of the general membership.

“Our sub-committees are absolutely critical to the work of the union and the PE’s decision-making process between conventions,” says HEU secretary-business manager Judy Darcy. “This is a real opportunity for members to play a leading role in the direction our union takes over the next two years.”

Sub-committees meet face-to-face two or three times a year. They are responsible for acting on convention decisions, carrying out the committee’s action plans over the next two years and connecting with HEU members between meetings.

The union’s PE sub-committees are: Anti-Privatization; Occupational Health and Safety; Political Action; Pensions; Global Justice and Peace; Women’s Issues; Men’s Issues; and Young Workers.

In addition, the union is seeking Expression of Interest applications for the following five occupational sub-committees: Professional and Technical; Clerical; Nursing Team; Trades and Maintenance; and Support.

You can download an Expression of Interest form and Committee Descriptions here. They are also available from your local executive.

You can also apply on-line.

Applications must be submitted to the Provincial Office by 5:00 pm on November 30, 2006.
