HEU recognizes International Day for Persons with Disabilities – December 3

Today, people around the globe are recognizing the International Day for Persons with Disabilities – a day that was established by the United Nations to create awareness, understanding and action for the legal and social rights of persons with disabilities.

An estimated 15 per cent of the world’s population – or one billion people – live with a disability.

Members of HEU’s People with disAbilities Standing Committee will be holding special events at their locals to commemorate the day.

Last year, CUPE National announced the launch of a disabilities rights campaign, championed by the Persons with Disabilities National Working Group. As the health services division of CUPE National, HEU has representatives on this working group.

This campaign will raise awareness of disability issues, create relationships with disability rights organizations, and provide tools to help ensure the rights of union members with disabilities are understood and upheld.

You can find resources and information on CUPE National’s website.

Events to mark this important date are happening right across the country.
