Updated: HEU supports September 5 strike by government, ICBC workers

The Hospital Employees' Union will be supporting striking government and ICBC workers on September 5.

That's when 30,000 members of the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union, the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union Local 378 and the Professional Employees Association will hold a one-day strike at government operations and at ICBC.

HEU's secretary-business manager Bonnie Pearson is encouraging HEU members to show support for striking union members on Wednesday.

Here's how you can show support for striking workers and respect their lines:

  • Find a BCGEU, COPE 378 or PEA picket line (list below) and show your support before or after your shift.
  • If you encounter a picket line at your place of work, please ask for the BCGEU picket captain who will identify an agreed-upon entrance where you can report to work. You can find out more about this here.

"Health care workers and other public sector employees deserve fair and reasonable settlements at the bargaining table," says Pearson.

"And we'll get those settlements by sticking together and supporting each other at the bargaining table and on the picket line."

Currently, there are more than 40,000 HEU members at the bargaining table, covered by four sets of talks.

The largest group in the Facilities subsector includes more than 38,000 HEU members. Talks for a new Facilities agreement resume next week.

There are 1,500 HEU members in the community health sector, where strike votes are being scheduled. Another 1,500 HEU members are in the community social services sector and they have already given their bargaining committee a clear strike mandate.

HEU also represents members at the health science professionals bargaining table. Those talks are continuing.
