The Hospital Employees’ Union is the union of choice for more than 180 Sodexo employees working at the recently opened Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre (ARHCC). The health care support workers – housekeepers, food service workers, call centre staff and porters – became the union’s newest members after voting 100 per cent in favour of joining HEU on September 26.

“I am thrilled that the Sodexo workers at ARHCC have voted so resoundingly to join HEU,” says the union’s secretary-business manager Judy Darcy.

“It has been an uncertain journey for many of these workers for several years. With this certification vote, they are truly home again.”

HEU represents more than 3,700 members who are employed by multinationals Sodexo, Aramark, Compass, and other private-sector companies, and who provide important health support services in hospitals and long-term care facilities.

Sodexo is a Paris-based corporation that holds the housekeeping contract in the Fraser Health Authority and is a member of the private consortium behind the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre.

HEU also represents about 600 licensed practical nurses, clerical workers, health technicians, and other health professionals at ARHCC who are covered by the province-wide facilities collective agreement in health care.
