If you worked as a screener, greeter, or ambassador during the COVID-19 pandemic and are covered under the Facilities Bargaining Association (FBA) collective agreement, you may be eligible for financial support to retrain for a new role in health care.

FBA members who were laid off due to the end of the Ambassador program can apply to access training funds.

  • Eligible regular full-time and part-time employees can access up to $8,000, and casual employees up to $1,500, in reimbursement for education and training costs.
  • Covered expenses include tuition, course fees, textbooks, and a daily stipend for attending approved programs. The goal is to help members transition into secure, quality jobs in the health care system.

How to Apply

  • Contact your manager or Human Resources department to apply.
  • Application deadline: July 31, 2025
  • Members on leave have until November 30, 2026 to apply.
  • You do not need to pay training costs before applying for and accessing the fund.
  • If you need support, contact your shop steward or HEU representative.

Why This Matters
During the pandemic, screeners, greeters, and ambassadors played a vital role in protecting patients and staff. When those positions ended, HEU fought to secure retraining supports – and won. Now, members have a chance to build new skills and continue their health care careers.

Private Sector Members:
A separate training fund has been established for HEU members who worked in private long-term care and assisted living sites. To learn more and apply, visit the Screener Retraining Fund webpage or email eoafinfo@heu.org for support.
