Work at HEU

The union has revised the process of membership recruitment for HEU representatives, administrative assistants, IT and maintenance staff. In order to address the recruitment needs of the union in a more timely way, the new process eliminates the restriction of an annual posting. HEU will now post job opportunities for members on an “as needed” basis.

We anticipate that job opportunities will be posted more frequently with this process. The postings for job opportunities for members will continue to be distributed through the Action Agenda. This process will replace the Annual Work Opportunity.

Please contact our Human Resources Coordinator if you have any questions.

Ethics Commissioner

The Hospital Employees' Union (HEU) represents more than 60,000 members who are essential to delivering quality care across the province. You can find our members working in hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities and in community services. We are B.C.’s largest health care union and we have a long and proud history of advocacy for our members.

The HEU Provincial Executive is the governing body of the HEU between Conventions. The Provincial Executive's powers are derived entirely from HEU’s Constitution and By-Laws.

The Provincial Executive must earn and maintain the confidence of HEU members by upholding the highest standards of ethical and professional conduct. To this end, all Provincial Executive members are subject to a Code of Conduct administered by an independent Ethics Commissioner.

The Code of Conduct sets out the standards expected of Provincial Executive members and defines the authority and procedures by which the Ethics Commissioner provides independent oversight of their conduct.

HEU is seeking Expressions of Interest from qualified individuals or firms to operate an independent Ethics Office in the role of Ethics Commissioner.

The Ethics Commissioner will bring relevant expertise, demonstrated knowledge, and perspectives necessary to carry out the responsibilities outlined in the Code of Conduct, which include:

providing advice to Provincial Executive members on questions of compliance with the Code of Conduct;

delivering educational programs regarding the ethical obligations and responsibilities of Provincial Executive members under the Code of Conduct;

assisting with informal resolution of confidential requests and complaints;

receiving and conducting preliminary assessments of complaints concerning violations of the Code of Conduct; and

investigating and reporting on the outcomes of complaints.

The Provincial Executive will appoint the Ethics Commissioner to a two-year term, with the possibility of renewal for additional terms. Expressions of Interest will be reviewed by a selection committee that includes members of the Provincial Executive and senior HEU management and a shortlist will be put to a vote before the full Provincial Executive pursuant to the Code of Conduct.

Interested applicants are asked to submit a letter of interest (maximum two pages) that includes:

• Full name, address and contact information;

• Community or organization affiliation;
