While June is Pride month, the many Pride events that happen throughout the summer (and beyond) make up Pride season.
Pride is a time where we come together to stand in solidarity with Two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual plus (2SLGBTQIA+) community members. It is an opportunity to reflect on the progress that has been made to protect and advance 2SLGBTQIA+ rights, but also to celebrate the important gains and contributions of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
Taking part in Pride events in your local community is a source of empowerment for 2SLGBTQIA+ community members and a great way for allies to support and stand in solidarity with 2SLGBTQIA+ members in their community. This is particularly important when many 2SLGBTQIA+ people across the world still face harassment, threats and violence because of their real or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity.
In Canada, Pride was first organized as part of the gay liberation movement following the decriminalization of homosexuality in 1969. To learn more about the history of Pride in Canada, please see here.
