JOHS Committee education in collective agreements

Some collective agreements have specific language about employer-paid JOHS Committee education for worker representatives. Check your collective agreement for details, or ask your shop steward.

This education would be in addition to the employer-paid mandatory minimum training, and the annual employer-paid health and safety education.

You can choose courses you need to increase your skillset for your role as a worker representative on the JOHSC.

HEU recommends committee members attend courses facilitated by the BCFED Health & Safety Centre.

Follow your worksite procedures to apply for the JOHSC education.

What do I do if I am denied?
  • Make sure you have followed the proper process to request time off
  • Reach out to your shop steward
Do I have to request union leave?

No, this education entitlement is paid for by your employer.

Can I participate in JOHSC meetings before I have attended any JOHSC education?

Yes! Your work experience speaks volumes. Your employer cannot stop you from participating, once you have been appointed.
