Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Consultations

Register for a DEI Open Consultation meeting

The DEI working group was struck to carry out the first phase of HEU's diversity, equity and inclusion strategy – a province-wide consultation with members about representation of equity groups and youth on the Provincial Executive (P.E.).

The DEI consultation work began in March 2020, just prior to the province-wide lockdown due to COVID-19. The working group held meetings with members in Victoria, Nanaimo and Courtenay on March 9, 10 and 12, 2020. But the consultation plan was cut short to comply with Provincial Health Officer’s orders and to ensure safety for HEU members. In March 2021, the DEI consulations with members resumed, and have shifted to an online format.

The purpose of these consultation meetings are to:

  • Share information about the current composition of the Union’s membership.
  • Consult broadly with members on the potential options for the representation of equity groups on the P.E.
  • Allow the working group to hear directly from members about DEI issues to inform recommendations for constitutional and policy changes at the 2021 HEU convention.

The DEI working group is offering a number of different consultation opportunities:

Open Consultation Meetings

These online meetings are open to all members in all regions of BC. Members attend these meetings on their own time. Registration for these meetings is required and can be done by completing an Online Registration Form or sending a paper registration to lvanstone@heu.org.

Registation for DEI Open Consultation Meetings are open up to two days before the meeting. However, members who wish to have meeting materials mailed to them are asked to register seven (7) days in advance of the meeting they'd like to attend.

Consultation Meetings in the Regions

Consultation Meetings in the Regions are region-specific online sessions.

Locals are invited to send an allotted number of representatives from their local to attend the DEI meeting in their region.

We encourage Locals to send participants who are underrepresented, reflecting their workplace diversity; emerging leaders; and young workers. The only requirement for selecting members to participate is that they must have an interest in the diversity, equity, and inclusion conversation, and they must commit to sharing updates about the DEI consultation process at their workplace.

To participate as your local representative, please contact your local executive. Registration packages have been sent to local Chairs and Secretary-Treasurers.
