Two important convention deadlines quickly approaching

As the union gears up for its 30th Biennial Convention, held this fall at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver, there’s an opportunity for HEU members to nominate their colleagues for special outstanding achievement awards.

The HEU Social Justice Award

First awarded to former HEU president Fred Muzin in 2008 for his tremendous contribution to the struggle for social justice, this award acknowledges outstanding work in the area of peace and global justice and may be presented to an HEU member, an HEU local, or another organization.

The HEU disAbility Rights Award

Established in 2010 on the recommendation of the HEU People with disAbilities Standing Committee, this award is to acknowledge an HEU member with a disability who has made an outstanding contribution to the union and/or the community by promoting and defending the rights of persons with disabilities.

The Mary LaPlante Sisterhood Award

This was first awarded to Mary LaPlante, feminist and trade union activist, at the 2006 convention upon her retirement after 22 years as HEU’s financial secretary. The award is now presented at each convention to an HEU sister who has done outstanding work promoting women’s issues in the union and in her community.

Awards will be presented during convention proceedings October 30 to November 4.

Each nomination must be signed by two nominators, and nominees must meet or exceed the criteria for the awards as stated on the nomination form. Current members of the Provincial Executive are not eligible to receive these awards.

Completed nomination forms must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 19 to the attention of Patti da Silva at HEU Provincial Office, 5000 North Fraser Way, Burnaby, B.C.V5J 5M3 or by email to pdasilva@heu.org or by fax at 604-739-1510.

HEU Provincial Executive candidate leaflets

The HEU Constitution and By-Laws includes a process for candidates to campaign for Provincial Executive positions during elections held at HEU’s biennial conventions.

Candidates can have the Provincial Office photocopy a leaflet for distribution, based on the following criteria:

  • The Provincial Office will produce up to 1,000 copies of the leaflet.
  • The photocopy-ready leaflet will be copied in black and white only, on one or both sides as indicated by the candidate, on 8½ X 11 white paper (letter size).
  • The Provincial Office will not provide format, layout, editing assistance or folding of leaflets.
  • Candidates must submit their leaflet by September 16. The photocopies will be ready for pick up or mailing to the candidate within two weeks.
